Student Successes Celebrated at Further Education Awards Night

The achievements and contribution to college of life of 83 students were celebrated at City College Norwich’s seventh annual Further Education Awards ceremony at the St Peter Mancroft Church, Norwich.

The FE Awards – all sponsored by local employers – were presented to students who shone during the last college year on a wide range of vocational and academic courses.  The awards celebrated the achievements of students across all of the College’s subject areas, with categories for Outstanding Progression, Special Achievement, Outstanding Achievement and Outstanding Community Spirit.  There were also two special Governors’ awards for Outstanding Contribution to College Life and Outstanding Student Achievement.

The Governors' Robert Walton Award for Outstanding Contribution to College Life was awarded to Access to Humanities and Social Science student Carly Cooper, 21, from Hevingham.  Carly won the award for her outstanding contribution to the college through her work as an enrichment mentor, as well as her dedication to her course. Carly is getting ready to start a Youth and Career Guidance degree at Nottingham Trent University.

The Governors’ Award for Outstanding Student Achievement was awarded to A Level student James Hipperson, 22, from Caston. James was an exceptional student achieving three A* grades and one A grade (for Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths). He is now working and wants to become a vet.

The Students’ Union Award for Enhancing the Student Experience went to A Level student Arron Gatley, 20, from Watton. Arron’s dedication to enhancing the experience of his fellow students was evident in his dedication to promote the Students’ Union and it’s activities across the college. Arron is now studying Access to Humanities and Social Science at the college and still plays an active part in the Students’ Union where he is Further Education Governor, Societies Officer and National Union of Students representative for societies and citizenship.

The St Peter Mancroft Church provided a fitting setting to honour the student’s successes, with guests treated to performances from The Poringland Singers and pianist Daniel Timms before they made their way to The Forum for a buffet reception provided by students from the college’s Hotel, Hair and Beauty School.

Dick Palmer, Principal of City College Norwich, said, “These awards provide a fantastic occasion for us to recognise and celebrate the successes of our students. I would like to thank the many local employers who have sponsored the awards and came along to present them. The skills these students have developed during their time with City College Norwich will prepare them for the world of work and will be invaluable to local businesses in the future”.
